The People’s Republic

I honestly don’t know where to start. Hmmm. Thought are spilling out of my brain right now and every two seconds for the last few days, I’ve had a moment where I’ve thought, “I have to write about that in my blog.” If I had any time at all, I would have written 10 entries each day. So, I will attempt to write what is sure to come out as random nonsense. Enjoy…

Lets start out with censorship. That’s a fun topic. I have to say that I really haven’t tried very hard, but I have found two websites that are unavailable from China – both belonging to Google. It seems they don’t like Google News or Google Cache. I guess it makes sense if they are going to censure anything. Although it’s really annoying if you want to use either of those to find something.

Without a doubt, Guangzhou has the worst drivers I have ever seen. It’s not just a handful, it’s not even a majority, it’s every single driver. They are just bad a reckless. There’s a reason why you are not allowed to open the left back-seat door of a taxi; it’s too dangerous. But wait, there’s more. The award for the worst pedestrians… also goes to Guangzhou. I’m so surprised that I haven’t seen any accidents yet. I’ve spent and probably will spend very little time outside, though I am still convinced that I will see some sort of accident in this city before I leave.

I have eaten at a lot of different restaurants in Guangzhou. I kind of like how they all serve tea instead of water for meals. It’s especially nice because every restaurant has their own special blend of tea, so it’s always a little unique. What do most use instead of napkins? Travel kleenex containers. It’s a little weird.

One of the best meals that I have had was dinner tonight. We went to a restaurant that serves food from the Xinjiang province (most western part of China). It definitely had influences from the Middle East. I was most interested by the dishes that we didn’t order. They had quite a collection of horse meat delicacies. What I was really excited to miss was the “Stewed Sheep Penis.”

Elevators can be quite interesting. My hotel’s elevator has a “-1″ floor. Amazingly to me, there is no 0 floor in between -1 and 1. The carpeting of another elevator that I was in today has chinese characters that say “Thursday”. Apparently, they change the carpets in the elevators every day.

My bed is hardly a bed. I’m fine with it because it reminds me of going camping. It feels exactly like I am sleeping on the ground. At first I thought that I was lying on a box-spring without a mattress. On the bright side, it makes for a very decent table.

The People’s money is very interesting. It actually makes the US seem not so backwards. First of all, it’s wonderful that they were able to fit Mao’s picture on every single Renmin bill of 1 Yuan and higher. What’s astounding to me is that they actually have paper bills for fractions of a Yuan (known as Jiao). I have a paper Jiao that is worth approximately 1.2 US cents!

I’m glad that I got some of this stuff off of my mind. I know there’s a lot more that I wanted to write about, but I can’t think of any of it right now.
