Congressional Immunity

Why do we let our legislators get away with whatever we want? Congressmen are up in arms because Representative Jefferson (from my wonderfully intelligent city — although not my district), who has about 4 times the hard evidence on him to convict an ordinary person on bribery charges, had his office raided by the FBI over the weekend. Our congressmen are angry because they don’t want the FBI to be able to investigate them.

So basically, our congress writes all of the laws that we must follow. But they don’t want to have to follow them. They write the rules for how corrupt they can be. They write their own paychecks with our money. They know that they never have to be accountable because the people don’t pay attention to their representatives. Incumbents almost always get re-elected because no one cares or knows any better.

I hope that there are just a few bad apples in the bunch, but outbursts about the unconstitutionality of a police raid by almost the whole congress makes me think that the power has gotten to all of them.
